Match Preview: Stockport County Ladies v AFC Fylde Women

Writer: Heather WatsonHeather Watson

AFC Fylde Women will look to get back on track on Sunday when they travel to Stockport Sports Village to take on Stockport County Ladies.

This rearranged fixture takes place on Sunday 16th March, with kick-off at 2.00 pm.

Fylde’s away meeting with the Hatters was originally scheduled for 12th January, but that date fell victim to the wintry weather after a spell of freezing temperatures around the turn of the year.

Last time out, the Coasters were edged out 1-0 at home to Glen Preston’s resurgent Huddersfield Town Women. A second-half strike by Kate Mallin decided the result in the visitors’ favour as the Terriers held on to their one-goal advantage to record back-to-back wins and cement their position in fifth place.

Meanwhile, the Coasters were left to reflect on a disappointing result after turning in such a strong performance on home soil. Nevertheless, Danny Murphy’s team quickly have the opportunity to bounce back this weekend when they visit Cheshire to face Steve O’Hara’s Stockport County Ladies.

The eighth-placed Hatters head into this Sunday fresh off the back of a heavy 4-0 loss at promotion-chasing Middlesbrough Women last time out. On that occasion, the Boro bagged all four goals in a dominant first-half display, but Stockport stemmed the tide in an improved second half.

Prior to that setback, O’Hara’s side had enjoyed somewhat of an upturn in form over recent weeks. After booking their place in the next round of the Cheshire county cup with a 2-1 win over Chester FC Women, the Hatters then came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw at home to Doncaster Rovers Belles the following week. The Hatters kicked off March with an impressive 3-2 victory over Norton & Stockton Ancients to widen the gap on the teams below them in table.

When the two sides last met in September, the Coasters scored three times without reply to register their first win of the season at Kellamergh Park. On that afternoon, Fylde capped off an outstanding performance with goals from Iszy Binks, Katie Bowers Folan and Ylenia Carabott.

With vital points to play for at the bottom of the division, the Coasters will be hoping for something similar when they come up against the Hatters at Stockport Sports Village this Sunday.
