Match Preview: Leeds United Women v AFC Fylde Women

AFC Fylde Women sign off 2024 with a trip to West Yorkshire to face table-topping Leeds United Women.

This away fixture will be played at the home ground of Garforth Town AFC on Sunday 15th December, with kick-off at 2.00 pm.

The Coasters are looking to sign off the calendar year on a positive note after a difficult run of results in the FAWNL Division One North.

Following four straight defeats, Fylde remain at the bottom of the pile after 12 games played. However, they also know that they are only three points adrift of safety in a tightly packed lower end of the table.

In recent games, the Coasters have shown promising signs of their abilities as a team. Admittedly, their progress has been hampered by injury and illness over recent weeks, but this hard-working group is more determined than ever to achieve success on the pitch.

Fresh off the back of a positive week in training, the Coasters will be eager to put things right in their final outing of 2024.

As for this Sunday’s opposition, Simon Wood’s Leeds United currently occupy top spot with 25 points from their first 11 games, including the joint-highest number of wins in the division with eight. The Whites have been especially clinical in front of goal having scored three times in each of their last three games.

Last time out, Leeds came away with maximum points after a 3-0 victory over Norton & Stockton Ancients. Two goals from Amy Woodruff either side of Kath Smith’s second-half strike helped the Whites on their way to a convincing win on the road.

When Fylde hosted Leeds at the end of August, it was the Whites who came out on top on that occasion. Fylde took an early lead through Karri Chan, before Leeds turned the contest in their favour in the second half. Quick-fire goals from Sian Gibril-Keating and Katie Smith put Leeds in the ascendancy, before Sarah Danby added a third in the closing stages.

As the two sides prepare for their return meeting in Garforth this Sunday, the Coasters will have to be at their best if they are to earn a positive result.
